Bug Description
Never had this problem when I used the old Kobo button reader. Just got a new Kobo touch ebook reader. When I plug it in to my desktop computer (XP sp3), the computer (Windows XP) recognizes Kobo touch reader as the E: drive (and the F: drive, too, if a microSD card is installed), but Calibre does not recognize the Kobo ereader. Regardless of whether or not a microSD card is installed, Calibre gives the following error message:
calibre, version 0.8.21
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

Hi Timothy,
I agree. Weird is a good word. Yup, I thought of that one and rebooted both XP and the Kobo reader. No change.
Here's a bit more info which will illustrate how strange this is. Sorry about the length of this reply, but I'm trying to be thorough. I'm very comfortable with a command prompt, so I'll cut and paste from the DOS shell window to show you what I'm seeing.
After a reboot of both XP & Kobo, I plug in Kobo *without* turning on Calibre. The Kobo reader's main drive is E: drive, and the microSD is the F: drive. I've now put all my ebooks on the F: drive (the microSD) to simplify things. Thus no ebooks are located on the Kobo main drive, E: So the DOS dir command for the E: drive returns the following:
Volume in drive E is KOBOeReader Serial number is 4E2D:BBB0
Directory of E:\*
10/07/2011 4:50 <DIR> .adobe-
10/09/2011 0:38 <DIR> .kobo
10/08/2011 20:32 282 driveinfo.calibre
10/07/2011 1:01 2 metadata.calibre
284 bytes in 2 files and 3 dirs 8,192 bytes allocated
1,342,787,584 bytes free
Change directories to the E:\.kobo\ subdirectory and here is what the dir command returns:
[E:\.kobo]dir
Volume in drive E is KOBOeReader Serial number is 4E2D:BBB0
Directory of E:\.kobo\*
10/07/2011 4:50 <DIR> .

10,323,430 bytes in 4 files and 4 dirs 10,334,208 bytes allocated
1,342,787,584 bytes free
Okay so let's take a look at the F: drive where the ebooks are located. The dir command there returns this (more than 230 ebooks, so this is a long dir):
[F:\]dir
Volume in drive F is KOBO_BOOKS Serial number is 3564:3062

I have no experience with Kobos, but from the symptoms you describe it seems
like attempts to access the database file on the card are causing a filesystem
error which in turn causes windows to disconnect the drive.
I suggest reformatting your SD card, trying different cables/USB ports.
Wilson Longton (wlongton) wrote : Re: [Bug 869666] Re: calibre bug 869666 | #4 |
Thank you for your reply. As you suggested, I reformatted the microSD card (FAT32). I then rebooted both the Kobo touch ebook reader and the desktop computer (Win XPsp3), and after that plugged the Kobo into a different USB port. The Kobo only came with one cable, so I had to use that. No second cable is available to me.
As happened before with an earlier reformat, I was able to successfully load more than 200 ebooks from Calibre to the Kobo. I unplugged the Kobo, and allowed it to process the new content. It's working fine with the newly-installed books. I then plugged the Kobo back into the desktop. Nothing has changed. As happened before Calibre did not recognize the Kobo reader or the books on it. Got the usual Calibre error message:
calibre, version 0.8.21
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

So the only things we can say for sure are that the problem, as outlined in my earlier emails, still remains, and that reformatting does not solve the problem.
I am open to further suggestions.
Best regards,
Wil

Hi
Just to confirm, on the kobo you selected settings, device information
and touched the Factory Reset button.
If that is the case, you could try getting windows to do a chkdsk on
the main memory drive of the kobo (not the sdcard). The database it
is attempting to open is on that drive and there is something wrong.
I a check disk does not show any errors and you have done the full
factory reset you may have a defective device.
BTW, are you plugged in dirrectly to the computer (not through a hub
or usb extension cable). The touch is finicky about both.

Hi Tim,
Thank you so-o-o much. The Kobo touch reader seems to be working properly with Calibre now. First off, per your suggestion, I stopped using the USB hub and plugged in the Kobo directly to a vacant USB port. Less strangeness. That was progress. Then I unplugged the Kobo and turned off so I could remove the microSD chip. Turned the Kobo back on, plugged it in the USB port and hit the Factory Reset again as you suggested. That went well. Turned off and unplugged the Kobo, reinserted the microSD chip, plugged in and booted up the Kobo. Deleted all files on the microSD chip.
And it was clear sailing from then on. Calibre is now working fine with Kobo. Got more than 200 books loaded and running on the chip. My experience is that Kobo can get a bit strange with too many books loaded on the main drive, so I put all my books on the chip which eliminates any potential conflicts.
My conclusion is that the problem with Calibre not reading the Kobo drives must have been from plugging the Kobo reader into the USB hub. That seems to be what started the mess, as my recollection is that Calibre and Kobo were working okay before then. Thank you for your guidance.
May I make a friendly suggestion? If the Kobo touch reader is so doggone sensitive about a direct connection to a free USB port, perhaps a few words might be put on the Calibre website warning people about this. Never use a USB hub with a Kobo touch. You might also include the advice to use the Factory Reset for those klutzes (like me) who out of ignorance may have used a USB hub connection not knowing the hub connection (or an extension cable) is an invitation to a Kobo malfunction. Such a warning appears nowhere in the meagre Kobo touch documentation.
Again, thank you so much for your help.
Best regards,
Wil

Hi,
I'm getting more or less the same error. Kobo Touch V1.9.16
PC, Intel i920. Windows XP SP3.
Kobo connected directlyto a USB port with supplied cable.
I've tried a factory reset and I'm still getting the same error. Oddly, whatever the cause, I haven't had the same thing happen with the Kobo desktop software or when placing files directly as an external drive.

I heard back from Kobo tech support. They are pinning this firmly on Calibre...to the point they said, "Don't use Calibre...use Adobe Digital Editions".
Anybody any idea what is happening? To be fair, it only seems to happen when using Calibre.

I can see that the latest versions of Calibre (1.8 & 1.9) detect the Kobo Touch as a Kobo Touch/Glo/Mini/Aura HD
Calibre also recognizes the library in Kobo and determines those displays whether they are in the Calibre library or not, as well as displaying to which collection(s) each book is in.
Weird. Can you confirm that there is a .kobo directory on the device and that it includes a sqlite database. Also, try the normal stuff rebooting windows, turn off and turn on the Kobo.
