Bug Description

I'm a fan of the application and it is my primary way of reading my digital library, so it's broken-ness is the main thing stopping me from upgrading to Oneiric currently.

Anyway, when I fresh install the application from the Software Center in Ubuntu Oneiric 11.10 and attempt to run it, the setup wizard appears. Upon clicking the "next" option, My computer freezes, Compiz starts acting errantly (such as the shadow under Ubuntu's menubar growing darker and darker. I restarted the computer and attempted to run Calibre again. This time, upon hitting "next" I was kicked straight back to the login screen.

So, my Natty install being intact, I picked up its settings files and dropped them into my Oneiric home folder and attempted to run Calibre again (I also moved all the Library to a placement similar to what I had in Natty settings) and this time, Calibre just simply continually ate up RAM. By the time I could get System Monitor open to check what was going on, Calibre was using 2.1 of my 2.7 GB of RAM. And it wasn't even displaying anything.

The version that I have installed should be calibre 0.8.8+dfsg-1ubuntu1

Qt on Ubuntu 11+ with some video cards is broken. You need to bug Canonical to fix Ubuntu or better
switch to a non broken distro. Or turn off compiz.

Thanks for the input, I added Compiz as an affected app. Hopefully someone more used to Launchpad than I will be able to sort out what the bug needs to be filed against.

After some tinkering, I've found that this doesn't seem to be Compiz's fault. It would seem to be Calibre's (or Python, but you don't blame the interpreter for the bad language, if you'll pardon my saying.) I don't know who handles the Calibre package in the repos, but the one available simply does not work and needs to be changed. I've heard that, if installed from the site, the ap works fine. But you will end up with a flux of users who don't use or know about that and will be complaining of a broken app.

I do not maintain calibre's ubuntu package. The correct place to report bugs against the ubuntu calibre package is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calibre
