eBook language is set to system default on conversion or save to disk

Bug Description

When an ebook is added whose metadata contains the book language (like epub or mobi), the defined language is not used for files created by actions like conversion or "save to disk", but it is always replaced by the default language of the computer system calibre is running on.

The correct language setting is essential for books read with Kindle, as it defines which dictionary is used to lookup words.

In addition I couldn't find a way to display the book language or change it from the calibre gui.

Tested with calibre 0.8.8 on Windows 7 64 bit.

At some point in the ffuture calire will get support for per book language
metadata. Until I find the time to implement that, this is a wontfix.

 status wontfix

Changed in calibre:
status: New → Won't Fix

For the converting part it might be harder to implement, but at least for actions like "save to disk" it is unacceptable that calibre deliberately breaks ebooks that were perfectly fine and just transfered to my device.

If calibre doesn't know the correct value, it should just leave the language metadata field untouched, plain and simple (and easy to fix)!

Then don't use calibre. And spend a little time googling for the history of this issue, before posting duplicate bug reports.

It's quite confusing if you set bugs to wontfix despite saying you'll fix them, don't mark duplicates as such or set feature requests to invalid though you state it's on the todo list.

Of course it nice to have a project like calibre with only about 15 bugs open, but setting everything to invalid or wontfix is a bit of lying, isn't it?

And all I could find in the search doesn't explain why you don't remove the two lines of code who overwrite the valid language metadata with a wrong value?

Ah you are siebert from mobileread. Should have figured that out earlier. Once again, you go on my ignore list.

And for the record, my policy on feature requests that will not be fixed in a definite timetable is to mark them as wontfix.

And you need to attend a remedial class on how to use google.

WEll, this is the first result that got me here from google, you could at lest mark it as duplicate (that does not take so much time), because I am in the dark as to why this does not work.
