Bug Description
When expanding the width of the column (Title, Author(s), etc.) if you double click the edge it will auto expand until the largest value of that particular column is accommodated.
If this new width, however is so large that you cannot see both edges (The left to right scroll allows you to move to see everything) dragging the edge towards one way or the other does not actually change the width. When you move the scroll back the width will just change back to how it was.
I have found it necessary to increase the width of Calibre itself and decrease the size of all of my left-bound columns temporarily in order to change the size back.
This occurs most often with the tags column due to its inherit length.

Testing note: the problem can occur only after a column is edited. Otherwise the default sizeHint is used.
Changed to prevent a column from growing larger than the visible display. This does not affect columns being sized from history.
