Bug Description
Calibre 7.20*: While most of the dialogs for 'manage [category]' (series, publisher, etc) display a column with the book count, the one for Authors doesn't. Is this by design?

Yes, at the time that the dialogs were designed. These are 2 very different dialogs with very different implementations, with many years between them.
I added a counts column to manage authors.
