Bug Description

Version 7.12 for Windows

When I edit the metadata of a book and try to download a cover image, it will pull in images from Goodreads, Open Library, Fantastic Fiction, and occasionally Amazon (but not as often with Amazon as with prior versions it seems like).

It does not appear to retrieve images from Google (google images), Open Library, or any other source. I currently have them all checked to retrieve images from everything.

I have tried downloading cover images for dozens of books, many of them major author names and bestsellers. Ones that will return hundreds of images if searched for on a web browser.

This was also pointed out to me by a Reddit user who is experiencing the same thing.

I believe the latest version (7.12.0) broke something with downloading cover images. I just upgraded to 7.12.0 a couple days ago from version 7.9.0 and didn't notice this problem then. So, it could have been a release in between as well, I'm not sure about that.

The most likely answer is that the website broke something. A quick way to check this would be to try reinstalling 7.9.0 and seeing if it works again.

If it still doesn't work then the problem is "the last couple of days" rather than the calibre version update.

yes, there havent been any changes in calibre in this area in the last
few versions. IIRC Google Images is currently broken because the website
changed, it's on my TODO list to fix that, if possible.

And with a quick look at google images looks like google are in the
process of rolling out a new JS only version of their image search results
page, that makes extracting the data out of it much more painful, sigh.

Fixed in branch master. The fix will be in the next release. calibre is usually released every alternate Friday.
