Pictures disappearing

I use Calibre 6.14.1 to publish my books as epub. About half of the content of my books are graphics. They are all formatted as inline with text and mostly are simple pics, sometimes graphics grouped in Word. Today, and only by chance, I found that some of the pictures are not converted. They are not dislocated, they simply disappear from the file and are nowhere to be found. I only noticed that because some of the pictures obtained a somewhat awkward aspect ratio, which I wanted to fix. Then, I found out that the original pix are correct and much worse, others disappear. Files can be supplied.

Most likely those images will be in an unsupported format such as WMF.
If you attach a sample docx file demonstrating the issue I can confirm.

yes, those images are embedded as word drawings not simple images.
Probably because you added some effects like shadows etc in word.
Instead add any effects you need in a graphics program and just embed
the simple PNG as an image in word.

Hi Kovid,

yes, a minority of the pics are grouped ones like a pic with a circle or arrow. No special effect ever. I always did my books like this and so far, I never had a problem with omitted pictures. To be honest, I indeed never checked for that as an effect like this never came to my mind. And, in previous times, most, nearly all of my pictures were composed of different parts. If this generally doesn't work, the books would have to be empty without almost all the pictures. That clearly did not happen.

You have used word's drawing tools to draw on this pictures. This is not
supported. Do your drawing outside word, and import the final picture
into word as a PNG, then it will convert fine.

Not really, any changes/additions you made to the images after importing
them into word will be lost. Only the originally imported images will be
preserved.

Well, if it's done only importing the file one more time, it will be chicken feed. Reviewing book by book and page by page and then to fake the screenshots as it would be even more troublesome to redo them in real terms would be a much bigger effort. Thank you!
