Bug Description

Whatever the "Pick a random book" function is using to randomize result, it tends to get stuck cycling through the same handful of titles.

someone more savvy would be able to describe this far better I'm sure... sorry

as an end user I've been getting around this by manually selecting a new random book whenever I notice it's started again.

What I'm doing:
I have "Pick a random book" bound to Alt+F and will use that keyboard shortcut repeatedly to look for something to read.
I have encountered this issue both in Virtual Libraries and the "All books" tab

I am currently running calibre 5.30 [64bit] on Windows 10 Pro (64bit)

I understand this is probably a (very) low priority item, but regardless of whether it is ever addressed would like to take the opportunity to thank the calibre developers.

Calibre is an awesome piece of software and is probably the most essential piece of software I wouldn't be able to do without if I were to attempt to switch from Windows to Chrome OS. Everybody who has a hand in keeping calibre the awesome piece of living software it is, is doing something really amazing that you probably don't get nearly enough appreciation for.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you

You are most welcome. As for your issue, I could not replicate it after trying a 100 repetitions in a library of 1000 books. The occasional pick was repeated but there were no cycles. The selection of a random book is just one line of code (it invokes the python standard library randint function. It could be this function is buggy, however that seems unlikely.

Are you saying you want a previously selected book to never be re-selected?

hmmm, I suspect my experience may be a result of mis-perception and tend to trust your tests over that.

It may not have been what I originally meant, but that sort of feature would be awesome! Alternatively, the ability to shuffle the list of titles might fulfill the same niche (esp. if used with the "Auto scroll" function)

Just updated calibre and tested the feature. I stumbled across a handful of titles I haven't considered in a good while already! I know the original issue was all in my head but I appreciate the results regardless.

Thank you again, both for this and all your work with calibre

Newsflash. Caliber is a good program and I have not had any bugs with it. I use it to select a random book to read. Then I make a bibliography and literature review on a given topic for this site https://edusson.com/write-my-literature-review and that takes time. This is amazing. And greatly expands my horizons, thanks to the fact that a previously selected book has never been re-selected. And each book is like some sort of surprise to me.
