manage user categories not working in 4.15

When I create a new metedata tag for a book and try to add that to a created category or sub-category from the Manage User Categories function, it is not showing up in the category tree. Further, when I am in the Categories Editor, the list of applied items for the current category say '(not on any book)' for previously created items though they clearly are. The previously created ones show up in the category tree, the new ones don't even after restarting calibre and rebooting computer.

This actually started during the 4.14 release. At that time I went back to the 4.13 release. I was hoping the 4.15 release would fix whatever was broken.

My PC operating system is Windows 8.1.

Steps to recreate the problem:
1. I have custom metadata/column called Challenge Lists. I will create a new item in Challenge lists, lets call it RRRC 05-2020 May RTM English. I add this new item by editing the metadata, either individually or in bulk.

2. Choosing the category or sub-category I want to add this new item to, I right click to Manage User Categories.

3. In the edit categories dialogue, I filter to Challenge Lists, look for the specific item to add and click on it to add to the Applied Items and click okay.

4. Normally this would then show my new item in the category tree but it is not doing so.

First, thank you for the excellent details on now to reproduce the problem.

Commit 8a86cc1 on 7 March introduced a regression breaking the user category editor for all custom columns. Fixed.

BTW: Drag & Drop of an item onto a category still works.

Once the fix is released you will need to re-add the "missing" categories. You might see them in the editor as "Category (Not on any book)", which is a consequence of the fixed bug.

Fixed in branch master. The fix will be in the next release. calibre is usually released every alternate Friday.
