Please make it possible to open the cover image by double clicking on the cover in the Book details screen.

No, I mean open the cover image in what program? And you can already
open the cover in an external program by right clicking it in the book
details panel.

Please add that feature to open the book from the book details window also. I want to open it in Eye of GNOME.

Fixed in branch master. The fix will be in the next release. calibre is usually released every alternate Friday.

Perhaps it would be better that images opened by calibre's own image opener, the one used to view images in the viewer? In case there are no availble by the OS.

I highly doubt there exist any OSes that have calibre but no program to view images.
