According to that OS X is not seeing your device at all. It has to
either be a MTP device or show up in Finder for calibre to be able to
connect to it.

Yes, you are right. It doesn't show up on OSX Finder. I don't know if it possible to force this or not.

The remarkable with current firmware (28.2.2018) exposes an USB Ethernet device and provides a webui to up an download files. Up to now there is now mas storage. I'm not sure if there is a public API to the webinterface. SSH is also available which maybe a better option to access the books.

When the device is configured and plugged in, it can be interacted with via http. This blog post has an example that includes the curl incantation required to upload a document to the device via this web interface.

Thanks for your help,

I know that there are multiple hacks for the rM device, but it's not easy to use it day by day.
Even if I'm geek enough to use ssh, curl and terminal hacks this is not always the best way to interact with a device that you use day by day,

I've sold mine as it was really frustrating use it: the official way to sync content via their app require WiFi that sometimes I don't have (e.g. on holiday, mountain etc).

The USB connection is in Beta and doesn't mount rM as a MTP device or mass storage and the only way to use it is via SSH or Fuse or other hacks that are not really practical.
