Bug Description

I recently updated Calibre 2.82 on Mac OS X 10.12.3 (MacBook Pro). OK for working on Calibre database. Yesterday after extensive database maintenance I attempted to connect (via USB cable) with Kindle Paperwhite 5 no recognition despite being able to see Kindle on MacBook. Tried everything:
- instructions described in: http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq.html#my-device-is-not-being-detected-by-calibre
- every internet-reported "fix"
- installed 2.82 and re-installed 2.79 (huge dump generated & retained)
- rebooted Kindle paper white
- removed recent Calibre adding
All unsuccessful.

Any suggestions I want to move loads of changes to Kindle.

According to that your device is being successfully detected, see the lines:

Trying to open Kindle 2/3/4/Touch/PaperWhite/Voyage Device Interface ... OK
Main memory: '/Volumes/Kindle/'
Total space: (3265167360, 0, 0)

Try running calibre in debug mode and post the log when connecting your kindle. (Preferences menu->Restart in debug mode)

Thanks

Image from debug mode.

Yesterday I purchased another Kindle Paperwhite (brand new). I registered the new device and initiated (wi-fi connection from Kindle) downloads of a couple of books from Amazon. That worked well

I then tried Calbre 2.82: same outcome as before: Mac Book Pro OS X can see/recognise device using USB connection but Calibre unable to see/recognise Kindle.

So hopefully we’ll have a quick fix.

Umm is that debug log witht he device plugged in, because I can see no mention of devices in it at all. Also from the debug log you appear to be runninga large number of third party plugins, at leasta few of which interfere with device detection such as the unplugged and smart eject plugins. Disable/uninstall them, and you should be fine.

Resolved - thanks

It seems that one of the recent addons I loaded in during the past several weeks was the culprit. When I tried stripping away addons I managed to get Calibre to detect device presence. I knew I had quite a number of addons but I wasn’t entirely sure whether the addon had now been adopted into the Calibre release.

It took a little time as many of the “addons” cannot be removed. It may be a quicker process if the date loaded were displayed. Then you could remove in reverse order (begin with most recently loaded addons

I am now able to download from Calibre & Amazon (via USB). That was the objective. So many thanks.

Much of calibre's functionality is implemented under the hood as builtin
plugins, this is why user-installed plugins can do as much as they can.

There is a checkbox to only show the user-installed plugins in the list
of plugins.
