Unable to enter the edit metadata window via right-click menu

as of Calibre version 2.52 I cannot enter the 'edit metadata window' via
- right-click on a book
- select 'edit metadata'
- select any item from the submenu

The popup menus are flickering (but are visible), but I am not able to select any of the items (nothing happens)

when selecting a book and use the main menu item 'edit metadata' (in the menu bar at the top of the window), everything works fine and I can enter the metadata window

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 32-bit, and as mentioned before, I first encountered this issue in Calibre 2.52.

NB: the issue does NOT occur in my Calibre 2.52 install under Win10 32-bit.
