Bug Description

Please consider writing and installing an AppData file with the application description and some screenshots, else Calibre looks really bad in the GNOME Software Center. See http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/appdata/ for details; thanks!

I'm not quite clear as to the appdata files. If the purpose is to add an entry into the software center, does there really need to be one for every .desktop file in the calibre package or only one for calibre as a whole? I dont think it makes sense to have one for every .desktop file, since the two viewers and the editor cannot be installed by themselves, without the rest of calibre.

Yes, you need one file per .desktop file. At the moment there's no way of defining any kind of application dep chain, and I think from a end-user point of view it would be best if they could be installed/removed independently of each other. Of course, this is up to the distro packager. I don't know if it makes sense to show the viewers as independent "apps" in the software center or just the main calibre application. If you include all the .appdata.xml files upstream the distributor can then "cut up" the software into as many applications as desired, and also control which ones are shown in the software center.

All we're really asking for is more data. :)

OK, the next version of calibre will install appdata files for three of the four desktop files. The fourth desktop file is for a viewer for a dead ebook format (LRF) and will ilkely be removed in the future.
