Bug Description

I just changed the standard output format to .PDF in the Behavior settings of Calibre, primarily for the e-book conversions dialogs. However I noticed when I generated my newsfetches this morning they came out in .PDF format, which is something I'm interested in.

What I would like to understand is by configuring the default options under the Conversion section such as Page Setup and Output Options would this have an impact on how the newsfetch .PDF is formatted? For example, could I set margins for the 8 1/2 by 11 inch page output and also select the Serif and Sans-Serif fonts that are used, etc. in the resulting .PDF?

Second question, I noticed the table of contents of the articles is inserted into the comments section of the Calibre metadata for generating the .epub format. Is this capability available in the .PDF format or would it be considered an enhancement?

Thank you in advance for your assistance and reply to these questions.

Regards,

Jim Savitz

I will change the news download system torespect the page properties
when outputting to PDF. Adding support for ToC in comments with PDf is
not something I am interested in doing, patches are welcome.

Hi Kovid,

Thank you for doing this and I really appreciate it. The ToC in comments I can do outside of Calibre, even though it involves several manual steps.

Is there a way I could do this with the scripting language within Calibre and make it automatic? I don't have a good knowledge of the Calibre software architecture, but do have prior programming experience (many years of it, just in different languages).

If you could point me in the right direction like you did with the template editor and documentation on the functions and controlling how to create storage directory names, then I might be able to help you with this.

To make this work what you have to do is add support for writing and
reading comments metadata in PDF files. Which means adding support for
RDF metadata inside PDF files. That is a far from trivial task.
