I am also having a bug similiar to this. The sound applet only allows me to decrease the volume using a mouse scroll wheel, but I can never increase the volume unless I change it manually. Clicking on the sound applet and moving the bars. This problem fixes itself If do a killall on pulse audio.

Ubuntu 11.04

Sound Applet not working or not being able to change in volume via mouse scroll may be due in part because it uses the integrated gnome sound menu. Killall pulseaudio reverts it back to the original state before the integration and everything works fine.

Doing killall pulseaudio doesn't fix it for me. Scroll wheel will still lower volume but not raise it.

...although, if I change the "Varition for 1 mouse scroll, in %" config setting to 2 instead of 1, it will then scroll in both directions. However, with the setting at 2%, then according to the popup notification thingie, up-scrolling increases the volume in 1% increments, while the down-scrolling increment is 3%. If I set the Variation at 10%, the up and down scroll increments are 9% and 11% respectively. So there's a faulty variable somewhere which is causing the 1% Variation to scroll up at 0% instead (and down at 2%). But at least the Sound Control is usable this way.

Hello and thank you for this bug report (and sorry for the delay but it seems we've not been notified...)

This applet works differently if you're using Ubuntu 11.04 and newer or Ubuntu 10.10 and older.
For newer versions of Ubuntu, you should have a sound-indicator menu (just like the indicator sound in Unity) and the scroll action should be different.

Is it possible to launch the dock from the terminal and post the debug messages produced by this alsaMixer applet:
 $ cairo-dock -l debug | sed -n "/alsaMixer\// {N;p;}" > cairo-dock_debug.txt

affects: cairo-dock-core → cairo-dock-plug-ins

I can confirm with Joe that, that is indeed the case. I can change the volume variation to 2 and it will work both ways.

cairo-dock -l debug | sed -n "/alsaMixer\// {N;p;}" > cairo-dock_debug.txt
