Bug Description

The original version of caffeine for Mac worked this way, and other system tray stuff reacts to left-click. Simple left-click should toggle the state of caffeine-indicator instead of requiring right-click and choosing a menu item.

That's an unavoidable consequence of caffeine-indicator being an indicator (Caffeine did not use to be an indicator).

This seems to indicate (no pun intended) the opposite: https://unity.ubuntu.com/projects/appindicators/

That seems to say that all indicators should work with left-click, even when used in KDE (as I do) or GNOME or others…

Any link or other info on why being an indicator doesn't allow a left-click function?

That page is perhaps not the clearest, but it actually says the same thing as me: "Always left click to see the item". Not "to make the item do its thing". Notice the remark about "scrubbing": you can click any indicator and then, holding the left mouse button down, move left and right to open adjacent indicators.

In the case of Caffeine, the "items" are normal menu items.

Sorry, that should be "see the items", plural.
