Please can you explain a bit more clearly? As far as I can understand you are saying:

1. "caffeine" does not work.

Did you understand that it only prevents desktop idleness when you go full-screen?

2. "caffeine-indicator" does work, but only prevents the screen-saver, not hibernate/suspend.

That is probably a limitation of xdg-screensaver on your system; which desktop environment are you using?

Caffeine is a script to prevent start the screensaver and go into sleep or hibernation modes.
A status bar application able to temporarily prevent the activation of both the screensaver and the "sleep" power saving mode.

I use Linux Mint XFCE . Sorry for my english. I have used Google Translate. I have setup my power manager to turn off the monitor screen when there is no activity for 10 minutes and hibernation or standby "sleep" for 20 minutes. I watch the movie or video or gaming in full screen mode and Caffeine works automatically only for the monitor screen and screen saver, which means they are not switched off. But for "sleep" hibernate or suspend power saving mode ,caffeine is not working automatically and Computer goes into hibernation or standby " sleep " mode. I mean that is not automatically activated for hibernate or suspend mode as it was in caffeine 2.7.1 . For Ubuntu work to temporarily prevent the activation of both the screensaver and the "sleep" power saving mode only if activate from the icon trey "Caffeine Indicator , Manually control the desktop idle state". If you think that this is not a bug then sorry and remove the Bug report. But this problem is not affected only for me.
I think now you understand me.

Thanks for your explanation, it's clear now. Unfortunately, this is not a bug in Caffeine, it's a bug in xdg-screensaver (or a limitation, depending on your point of view).

You can file a bug at: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?component=xdg-utils&list_id=519388&product=Portland&resolution=---

I am also active in xdg-utils, so I may be able to work on the bug there, but at present the maintainers are working on finishing a new release.

By the way, the fact that it worked with Caffeine 2.7.1 is useful information which should help to fix the bug, so if you file a bug report against xdg-utils, do mention that information.

Sorry, I realise now that there is one aspect of your report which is strange and I do not understand it: you say that if you use the tray icon, it does prevent hibernation/sleep? That is very odd, as the tray icon does exactly the same thing as the automatic service…please can you double-check that this behaviour really does occur?

This version of caffeine does not work to prevent screen saver or suspend. The last version that worked for vanilla Ubuntu is 2.6.2 (bzr 559) which I have had to fall back to. Versions after it wouldn't even run, up until 2.8.3 upon which I was initially pleased to see the indicator open up when I attempted to run the program, however, it does not prevent screensaver when initiated manually or automatically.

Thanks rrt, reading quickly through the notes I'm unsure if this was actually fixed or might still be a bug in an unspecified Ubuntu package. As comments ended in early 2015 I'll close this as being fixed.

Hi paulw2u: I think the bug should be marked either invalid or upstream. I'm not sure it was ever demonstrated in xdg-screensaver, but if there is a bug, it's almost certainly in xdg-utils. Certainly no fix was ever made in Caffeine.
