want a way to see the server debug log on the client

It would be useful in debugging if you could see, from a smart server client, the debug log for the server. Then we could use this to see how much time the server is taking (without network overhead) in different operations, or debug information about server-side repository operations.

One way to do this is to support this only over ssh and to then send it over stderr.

We would need a way to turn this on. One way would be to set an environment variable propagated by ssh. Alternatively you could put it onto the command line or into the server-side configuration.

We may also want a way to let it be forced off on the server.
