some tests are not properly connected to test uis

I'm not sure where this is happening yet.

This show up pretty early on, and I've seen clear() calls happening too
- the text doesn't consistently stay on screen.

I'm thinking that adding a temporary assert to the progress code that
the file being written to isn't actually stderr might make sense to
figure this out.
