optirun fails with "Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual"

Description of the problem:

After installing nvidia proprietary drivers and bumblebee (following the debian wiki on bumblebee) I experience the following behavior:

1- GNOME goes to fallback mode

2- both glxgears and optirun glxgears fail with the following output:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
