Bug Description

The problem is a total random freeze with unity 3d, i solve the problem with unity 2d. I suspect radeon driver (Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV515) don't interpret correctly 3d instructions.

It's a fresh install of Ubuntu Precise

I think it's not connected to specific ATI drivers. I have the same fail on two different machines: 1) notebook with Core 2 Duo and NVIDIA GeForce 8660 2) desktop with i7 3770 (with embedded Intel HD 4000). Fail is often caused by firefox, but may happen at any other time. Also, bug disappeared after switching to unity-2d. My `lspci` on the second computer:

I am experiencing the same kind of freeze on ubuntu 12.04 using either unity 3d or gnome shell. It is a radomly freeze. The screen completly freeze, but the mouse still mouve. After this freeze occured, every applications still run (music ... etc). Sometimes, after severals seconds, compiz restart automaticly (the crash has been detected and an automatic report has been sent). But most of times, I need to restart the X server using the comand (ALT + Impr + K). After that the system remains a litlle bit unstable and I often need to reboot.
This crash appears frequently when I start to use the dash, when I am playing video on the wed (firefox) and perhaps when I am using some applications such as minitube, musique (need QT library) and clementine...

This freeze has never occured on ubuntu 11.10.

I now activated the proposed updates : the bug still occured but most rarely (only using the dash).

Same problem:

Radeon Mobility X1600

Unity 2D works perfectly, unity-3D freezes randomly. I've tried without success:
- upgrade kernel to 3.4.9 version;
- install lowlatency kernel;
- disable the kernel thermal module with "thermal.off=1".

May be "thermal.off=1" gave me a little more time before freezing, but I cannot be sure about it.

When unity-3d stops working I haven't any message from system, neither in var/log/syslog nor in dmesg.
Mouse pointer keeps moving but buttons have not effects. Every tasks is freezed, and I can only press CTRL ALT F1 and use "kill -9 -1" to return on login screen.

Everything freezes except the mouse pointer.
Happens approx 2-5 times per day. I can get back working by killing the X-server (Alt-PrintScreen-K)

This bug, or one very similar, also affects me.

The freeze only occurs when using dash.

The mouse pointer still moves but nothing responds and the rest of the screen including clock, pannel, dash, all programs, etc are frozen.

HOWEVER, Ctr+Alt+F1-7 still work to open other tty's.

The quick workaround that works for me is to kill compiz like so.

1) Press Ctrl+Alt+F3
2) Log in to a terminal
3) type ps -A | grep compiz
and make note of the process id (pid)
4) type kill (pid)
replacing (pid) with the process id of compiz for your session eg. kill 1274
5) Press Ctrl+Alt+F7

You should be returned to your desktop which will be missing a panel, dash, etc. These will automatically reload in a few moments.

P.S. The following command could be substituted for steps 2 and 3. I have made it into a bash script called killcompiz
sudo kill $(ps -A | grep compiz | awk '{ print $1 }')

The shortcut command would be better as:

sudo kill $(ps -A | grep " compiz$" | awk '{ print $1 }')

The preceding space and end of line '$' ensure that you do not match other processes with compiz in their name such as a bash script called kill_compiz.sh for instance. ;-)

Jonas Rockenbauer, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
