Bug Description

Hi,
as all of the previous reporters, my system freezes very very frequently. I upgraded from 11.04 to 12.04 last Thrusday, and since them I have had to reboot the system every couple of hours while working. Either it freezes completely, including mouse, or only the environment while I can move the mouse but I cannot launch anything as there is no response. L.

Yes, I am using unity-2D and it is really annoying to reboot the computer so often, and evern more when I am doing computations (I use my laptop -I will provide the details tomorrow morning from the office- for scientific computations and not for playing video, games or music) Beside this freezing, also the screen goes black when for instance I switch from one to another window (google chrome to thunderbird or to open pdf file). Sometimes, this black screen ends up into a complete freeze of the system, others it recovers. Regards, L.

I found a wordpress blog where it gives some hints to solve the problem

http://sixp4ck3r.wordpress.com/2012/05/12/solucion-al-problema-de-nvidia-con-unity-3d-en-ubuntu-12-04/#comment-45

but I don't dare to do it as the nvidia-current and nvidia-settings do not coincide, the 1st one being 295.33 and the 2nd one 295-40-0ubuntu1, and furthermore, I don't even know if they are interconnected and I might create some conflict leaving my system even less useful.
Thanks for spending your time on this!!
L.

Ok, actually the fixed proprietary nvidia driver(295.49, future current) is in testing, then for this few days can you please run in Unity-2D, choosing it at login screen?
Thanks

Hi again.
Even worst. I have logged in with Unity-2D and when I have simply tried to open thunderbird, the system is frozen and 99% CPU usage: I can move the pointer, but cannot activate anything. Thanks again!! L.

When idle, you can also perform a memory test, selecting the option from the grub menu.
at boot hold down Esc and select with down arrow memtest.
Let it run for one hour or more, look under errors tag if it is not 0.

Hi Fabio.
I did run one complete memtest and the result was "no errors". I did that yesterday morning.

I kept on trying to work but the pc frozen more and more frequently. Thus, this morning I have decided to install ubuntu 11.10 (I had 11.04 before the upgrade to 12.04), I have restored my back-up and I am "on the road" again.

Once 12.04 will be more stable or the problems will be solved, I will upgrade.

Thank you very much for your kindness and patience with me

Luisa.
