Slow opengl games under Unity

Bug Description

I've recently updated from Ubuntu 11.10 (64 bits) to 12.04, but I don't know if the problem occurred before as I used Gnome 3. After the update I tried Unity and I notice delays in opengl games (not just framerate drop, but even when limited at the same FPS it feels to pause repeatedly for fractions of a second).

Changing the window manager temporarily to metacity (or starting a session without Unity) solves the issue, as indicated here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1741768

This thread is a bit old, but I think it describes the same problem. If this can't be solved, would it be possible to add a widget or command (cleaner than "metacity --replace && program && unity --replace") to enable/disable compiz (or whatever causes the problem)?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/998507/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.
