Bug Description

You can read a little bit about my quest to get my computer back to normal on here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11920008#post11920008

After upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 Unity 3D was unusable and slow. I managed to get it fixed by deleting ~/.config however after a couple of minutes my computer freezes and the only way to get it back is using the reset button. I can SSH from another computer and see Xorg is taking 100% of the CPU.

It seems Gnome Shell is not affected. The problem only happens in Unity 3D.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/997075/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I have the same issue. I think it has to do with the Nvidia 8 series, because I have a Nvidia 8800 GTX.
I tried the proprietary driver packages, didnt help. I then tried to manually install the latest driver via Nvidia's website. Again, didnt help.
I have only tested it using XFCE, but I suspect the same under Unity. I really am only affected when doing anything requiring any "special effects" such as from Cairo-dock and switching workspaces. I also have compositioning enabled to allow a proper transparency on my conky.

I haven't used Unity for months because of that. My fix so far is using Gnome Shell with a couple of useful extensions and a different theme. I got used to it and haven't had any crash since. It's unfortunate because I really liked Unity but now I'm a Gnome 3 convert... Haven't looked back

I confirm.
100% CPU by Xorg, sometimes segfaults (it restarts Xorg).
I'm using binary nvidia drivers, not nouveau

I did a previous-LTS to current-LTS upgrade. Prior to that it worked.
