update manager gets error upon checking for updates (12.04)

When run through program or using apt-get this is the error I get. Can't remove the package to install it again either without getting the error.

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header
E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_restricted_binary-amd64_Packages
E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

See if these commands fix it:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
sudo apt-get update
