Xorg suddenly logged me off without warning. All the unsaved data got lost.
I was using Virtualbox when this happened (just to clarify: Ubuntu is the HOST system; inside it I was running virtualbox with a Windows guest)
The logoff may well have been triggered by a VirtualBox crash caused by a bug in VirtualBox, but if Xorg crashes because of a program, no matter how badly the program behaves, there's a dreadful bug in Xorg.
