Bug Description

On precise stand-by of my Notebook stopped to work.

When I start the stand-by process I can see the system "shutting down" - screen locked, boot-animation... than the harddisk shut down and than nothing happens any more. The CPU Fan and LCD are running and running...

Only thing I can do is to force power off.

I tryd some mainline kernels: older one (3.1.10), current one (3.2.16) and also newest one (3.4.0rc5).

All have the same problem. I also created from the final release a USB-key with the Ubuntu Precise live-system and did also a try there, but without luck (same problem).

Something must have changed, then before it was possible to switch in stand-by mode with Ubuntu 11.10.

I did the DebuggingKernelSuspend "resume-trace" process and that's the result:

[ 1.516917] Magic number: 12:449:758
[ 1.517035] tty ttyS9: hash matches

on my first try I got:

 i8042 i8042: hash matches

I did again the progress:

[ 1.522750] Magic number: 12:831:52
[ 1.522894] pci 0000:14:00.2: hash matches

its every time a other match?!

found something in the logfiles (/var/log/pm-suspend.log.1):

/etc/pm/sleep.d/10_unattended-upgrades-hibernate suspend suspend: success.
Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager suspend suspend:
Having NetworkManager put all interaces to sleep...Failed.

Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/60_wpa_supplicant suspend suspend:
Failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open: No such file or directory

Possible that it is the problem?

I investigated some more time in this problem and saw, that when I start with "nomodeset" and "fb=false" and running pm-suspend from terminal my pc was ready to go into standby... also problem was wakeup.. there I left with a black screen.

because of this I installed nvidia binary driver and there I am also ready to go into deep sleep (S3), but again I get a black screen.

Switch to a other Terminal (ALT+F1) not working, but i see disc activity... only hold power key is possible.

So finally: what can I do that nouveau driver or nvidia driver works with S3 ?

yes... got S3 running with nvidia driver

thanks to the hints from there: http://www.amitsrivastava.net/2008-03-23-hibernate-suspend-resolved-ubuntu-gutsy-nvidia-dell-vostro/

I changed only this in /etc/default/acpi-support

SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
POST_VIDEO=false
SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE=true

possible I can also get nouveau running...
