Bug Description

If you install likewise and samba and try to integrate the two with a samba-interop-install --install, installation will fail because samba is an unsupported version.

In looking at the pbis git repo, samba 3.6 support was attained at hash 4f842ad5ed4e389926c4d0b7d8fd102f4445977b in the pbis central repo ( git://source.pbis.beyondtrust.com/pbis.git). This causes a major issue because this is a scenario that worked out of the box before will no longer works (natty). In order to work around I have to roll my own or download the platform 7 from pbis (which a prefer not to do).

I thought I was going crazy. I just started testing this a few weeks ago with 12.04 beta. Worked until I updated. Been pouring over the conf files ever since. Any ideas on how to repair?

The command "samba-interop-install --check-version" shows this

Found smbd version 3.6.3
Unsupported smbd version 3.6.3
Error: ERROR_PRODUCT_VERSION

Please, any solution or workaround?

Does samba-interop-install just update configuration files , if so can you hand edit them to make likewise and samba work in precise? Since precise is LTS can this be fixed please and pushed through SRU.

Also would like an update on this, very dependent on this.

You cant ship a new version with samba & likewise that isn't compatible with each other.

I agree with Jonas above that Canonical/Ubuntu really must stop putting out sets of packages that are incompatible with each other, especially in LTS releases, ESPECIALLY when confirmed bugs go unsquashed. It would be better to not have Likewise in the distribution to begin with rather than have us waste our time trying to get the package from the repo working. Far better to just let people go to the BeyondTrust web site, download pbis-open, and install it manually. Because THAT actually works as advertised.

This is a significant issue that really should be corrected, especially for LTS releases such as 12.04. Fixing it in a later non-LTS release like 12.10 is not a good solution for anyone who uses this in a corporate environment. People choose LTS for stability, so if it's not fixed in the original LTS release, we end up having to deal with the issue for at least 2 years before we even have the option to upgrade to the next LTS release.

I hope this is at least fixed in 14.04 LTS, but I won't get my hopes up. Similar bugs in likewise-open shipped with 10.04 LTS, forcing a manual installation from the Likewise website if you wanted it to actually work properly. It's been 4 years since 10.04. It's time to either get this right or remove it from the default repositories.

Is there any further movement on this issue? Currently running Ubuntu 14.04.2 with Samba 4.1.6-Ubuntu and LikeWise Open 8.2.2.2993

I'd really like to progress this as I'm working on an important project so any assistance or feedback would be much appreciated
