Bug Description

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin 64-bit, my laptop fails to suspend. When I hit the suspend key, the screen goes blank and the CPU fan ramps up to maximum. But the laptop does not ever suspend, it just sits there with the fan whirring.

This seems to be a regression- I had experienced this issue in 11.04, it was fixed in 11.10, but is back again in 12.04.

I got an ASUS N55SF with a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 installation, and it fails to suspend. It hangs on a black terminal screen with some text on it (from the initialization of the system if I got it right, "System V stopped" stuff is the btotom line).

I don't know if it's a regression for me as it's a new laptop, but I'm installing 12.04 on my older HP laptop which had a 11.10 installation and suspend worked there.

I guess I didn't add my hardware details :) Attached the Windows (I know, boo hiss!) system information report for my laptop.

This solved the bug for me!
http://thecodecentral.com/2011/01/18/fix-ubuntu-10-10-suspendhibernate-not-working-bug

Just had to tweak something so the wifi would wake up too. I added "iwlwifi" to the DRIVERS variable in the script.

I had this problem too, however I realised (after browsing /var/log/pm-suspend.log) that I had a custom file to get around a problem in 11.10 -- i.e. I had /usr/lib/pb-utils/sleep.d/00Custom

Removing this solved the problem for me. Not sure if this helps the users above or not, but I thought it worth passing on.

@Amir Thanks Amir, that worked for me as well.

However, we all agree that a fresh install of Ubuntu should "just work", so this bug remains a problem and is harmful to Ubuntu's reputation among new users.

tdeering, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

No longer affects me because I have sold the laptop that was affected. With my current laptop and Ubuntu 13.10, I cannot reproduce this issue. Perhaps Amir can still reproduce the problem with his setup? Amir, please respond if so.

Hello again,

Though I still got the laptop, I no longer use Ubuntu 12.04 on it and thus I cannot further test the issue. Furthermore, this laptop is my main workstation, so I cannot reinstall 12.04 for testing.

I have recently installed Xubuntu 13.10 and did not experience the issue, though if it still happens on laptop models with the iwlwifi module on an LTS release, then everyone should be a sad panda.
