Bug Description

12.04 stable i386 on ibm thinkpad t42, updated from 11.10 on 03.28.12

xserver-xorg-v 1:6.14.99~git2

Since update all graphics is really really slow. The unity dashboard crawls block by block over 3 seconds to fully open. The unity panel crawls slowly in. Videos in firefox displays a 1 fps picture show. with floating waves through the picture. Desktop window movement ist struggly like a picture show.
This laptop is on ubuntu since 8.04 and was through all releases fast in graphics. Will try fglrx now

eric@calliope:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4

eric@calliope:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
162 frames in 5.0 seconds = 32.336 FPS
167 frames in 5.0 seconds = 33.312 FPS
168 frames in 5.0 seconds = 33.557 FPS

Further checkups: The fglrx did not support the m10 radeon mobility anymore, so this is no solution. Tested xorg-edgers, but with no positive results to the speed problems. Every movement occurs in visible refresh waves. Dash took 3 seconds to open.

Sync to vblank does not matter, no difference if it is switched on or off.

Try this: Open firefox, go to youtube and start a video. Now open the unity panel and click to dash.

Result: The video goes stutter, the sound is distorted and fragmented while dash took 3 seconds so slowly appear.

News: The described bug is hard related to the radeon m10 9600 graphics. On the thinkpad x41 with nearly same hardware but intel i915 graphics none of upper problems appears. Videos playing on, dash jumps in when clicked and nothing stutter.

Thinkpad T41 with radeon mobilty is affected

We're closing this bug since there has not been a response from the original reporter. However, the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. If you're not the original reporter, we'd prefer you file a new bug report.

Some tips:

  * Report X.org bugs via the command: `ubuntu-bug xorg`

  * Test against the latest development Ubuntu. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/
Bugs marked as affecting the development version tend to get priority attention.

  * The `xdiagnose` utility has functionality for enabling debugging and
analyzing a few common X problems.

  * Tag your bugs with the Ubuntu versions you have reproduced the issue in.

  * See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for tips on writing good bug reports.
