Bug Description

Binary package hint: kopete

When the user is adding or modifying a jabber account, there's no field for entering his alias (or nickname or shortname or other that means the name for display for those who have him in their contacts list or to display in chats).
Tested in kubuntu edgy.

it seems you have to do it by "edit user info" after creating the account.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

This is set via the "identities settings"

I took a while to test it again (and tested a bit quickly at the kubuntu-kde4 beta version - I believe it's the latest release of kopete, at least, for kde4.0.x) and, really the *only* way to enter an alias for *one* jabber account is to do it for an identity.

Well, I don't know about you but, if not a bug, it's a really weird situation (and unnatural behaviour):

* Imagine if you have several accounts into the default identity and want one jabber account to have a different alias. You would expect just to edit a field but you gotta create another identity and gain one extra thing to manage (and get lost into, 'cause now you have 2 identities - at least one, undesired - , and, to make them to have the same data (like picture, for example), you have to duplicate these data every time you change them). And, look, you only wanted to use a different alias! Not have to manage another identity!

* I'm not gonna take your time driving you through thinking if you have a (or maybe 2) Google Talk (jabber) account(s), another jabber one from your job (like I have), and a ICQ's, and a Yahoo!'s (and, who knows, more ;-) ) ... How many identities would you have to manage! And they'd only be different by the alias ... The option would not to make use of identities and set these data at the accounts directly but you can't 'cause they don't have appropriate fields for them (well, jabber accounts - I think MSN's - and maybe others - do).

* I once changed the alias from my job's jabber account through PSI (which I used there for a while), but I couldn't change it again through kopete (which is far better in everything else) without changing the whole identity.

BTW, by the same logic, having a picture field for jabber accounts doesn't look so bad (and unneeded), does it? ;-)

The thing is, IMHO, an identity should have what you want to be global and you expect to be able to change only specific data into accounts. *That* is to make having identities an useful feature! It's something I (and probably everybody) would want to use!

Ok, I'm sorry but, if that's the intention of identities, that sounds like a bug to me, as you have no way to change specific alias (or picture) for the accounts you want to.

i'm experiencing this also as a bug.
Normally kde has so many options compared to gnome why not an alias field?
