Bug Description

In 12.04, I am unable to assign the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Alt-w to anything.

For example, if I go to System Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts and try to modify the keybinding for "Launch Web Browser" to Ctrl-Alt-w, the window just returns to the main System Settings screen and the new keybinding is not assigned.

This was with a fresh install of 12.04. Tried it with a new user as well and the same problem exists. I was able to do so without any issues in 11.10.

This may be related to the issue in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/863549.

Please revisit this bug. I use Ctrl-Alt-W/S/A/D to switch between workspaces, and this bugs prevent me from setting up fast workspace switching.

Even a dirty workaround is appreciated. Thanks.

I still experience this bug, on a fully updated 12.10!
(Actually I didn't have this problem in 12.04)
Re-opening the bug...

I would also really appreciate a fix. I also use ctrl+alt+WASD to switch workspaces as I found this the fastest way on earlier releases.

Uh, still no traction on this bug? This is horrible..

Here, I poked around. As a workaround, do this from a terminal:

$ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys www '<Control><Alt>w'

Sorry, my response was about the open bug (which I had the same problem with). So again, to provide support to the others who ask, "How do we bind our switch workspace up key?" You may try this:

$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-up "['<Control><Alt>w']"

I didn't test it, but hopefully it works for you.

Incidentally, I've used the exact same command a few weeks ago, but forgot to report back here. So it does work fine :)

I had this bug's problem and also the fact that my shortcuts are "forgotten" on each reboot.
So I made a script that is run upon login and restores my custom shortcuts: https://gist.github.com/cmavr8/5248241

I am also affected by this bug in 12.10. When I want to set Ctrl+shift+w for accessing the web, it automatically takes me back one tab in unity settings.
