By specifying the root and swap partitions only, kubuntu is now installing (I avoided the crash). Partitions for home and tmp are already on the hard drive. So under Plan B, after kubuntu is installed successfully using the simplified partitioning scheme, I will move home and tmp to the separate partitions, and modify fstab to make it permanent.

For me, the crash happens when exactly three partitions are manually specified.
Installing from the USB Flash drive.

Hi it seems to be intermittent, i tried various combinations and the one that seemed to work for me was to specify formatting as the last step by checking the checkboxes that way.

Happened to me while trying to install from CD.
Does not happen with Xubuntu 12.04.
Crash occured while manually specifying disk partitions.
Installer then 'self-booted' to Live CD mode.
I ran the installer again and the crash occured at the same point.
I am therefore unable to install Kubuntu 12.04.
Very dissapointing that this critical and common bug has not been fixed.
Maybe Kubuntu just don't care after Canonical pulled their funding.
What choice then for KDE? Opensuse? LOL not with Novellsoft!
I think Canonical is trying to kill competetion.
Canonical is run by Microsoft.
Resistance is futile.

Yes, nothing like a LTS release that is so buggy it needs support.

I was trying to reinstall after the crashes I'm getting with Precise pissed me off to try upgrading to quantal, which fucked up my system so bad apt won't install jackshit. I thought I'd give (K)ubuntu another try with a clean install. Stupid me.

So, Debian or Mint? Luckily I downloaded both...

installer crashes out as i specify swap after specifying / occurs in both 12.04 and 12.04.1 of kubuntu
Since I first used ubuntu ans kubuntu and filling bug reports it has become obvious there is a lack of fixing bugs - no wonder linux has zero impact on windows market share

Thanks to Rick Graves for making me see the light!!! (slaps forehead in a "why didn't I think of that" gesture!!)

I've spent about 5 hours on this problem today, which is added to the 'at least' 5 hours I have probably spent over the last SIX releases fighting this same *(&*^&% problem.

But by selecting just the '/' partition (already had a swap present and didn't even select it), I am now loading 13.04 beta 1.

Why in hades hasn't this problem been fixed about 5 releases ago????

And Graves solution is not something that someone relatively new to Kubuntu would want to do... so it kinda make linux look bad to newbies.....
