Bug Description

I'm getting very haphazard scrolling behaviors using the scroll wheel in GTK 3 applications. It will work properly for a time then cease to function with no apparent cause.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and I have disabled overlay scrollbars using the environment variable disable in /etc/profile.

I have verified that the problem manifests in:

Transmission
Nautilus
System Settings
Empathy
Ubuntu Software Center
Devhelp

The problem does not seem to exist in:

Gnome Terminal
Any application not using GTK 3

I can return it to proper functioning by removing and replacing the psmouse kernel driver.
When I do so, these messages appear in the dmesg log:

[ 1639.710729] psmouse serio2: synaptics: Touchpad model: 1, fw: 7.2, id: 0x1c0b1, caps: 0xd04733/0xa40000/0xa0000
[ 1639.780224] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio2/input/input10

If it is possible that this is a hardware issue, my hardware is a Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop. I am only aware of this problem affecting the touchpad scroll.

The recent update to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics seems to have fixed it, so I'm going to mark this bug as a duplicate of #982771.

I think this is related: With the mousewheel, vertical scrolling works here, but horizontal scrolling does not. Except in Gnome Terminal and Synaptic.

Horz.scrolling of the menubar, desktop-switcher, Gedit's tabs & horz.scrollbar, does not work.

This problem is not time dependent. It's a 'feature' right from go.

Install is 12.04 fallback. Mouse is a plain Logitech USB wheelmouse with PS/2 adaptor. Works fine with older LiveCDs, and with other hardware and OS's.

Also confirmed the misfortune with the 12.04 liveCD on two boxes with this mouse.

(Does horizontal scrolling with mouse-wheels work for most people on 12.04? Just personally, I'm pretty curious. Thx.)

Belay that. I finally found that horizontal scrolling across tabs was removed from GTK3. "May surprise users."

Michael Moorman, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-synaptics REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
