Bug Description

Feisty beta locks up a Benq DD DW1625 DVD writer when using usplash at startup.
Boot process hangs about 10 sec., then continues:
Dmesg shows:

[ 236.663247] hdb: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
[ 236.663251] hdb: status error: error=0x00 { }
[ 236.663253] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
[ 236.663255] hdb: drive not ready for command

over and over.

Found this not happening when starting up with an open tray (so the drive is reset after control is passed from initrd to the actual boot process) or not using 'quiet splash' as boot parameters.

Drive is locked, neither reacts to 'sudo eject' nor pressing the drives eject button.

I am having the same problem using the BENQ dvd drive. I removed "usplash quiet" from menu.lst and it works normally...

But the problem reappeared in 2.6.20-15. If I boot to 2.6.20-14 it works fine.

I can confirm this:
So with the -20 (or something) build of 2.6.20-15 it still worked. Now i dist-upgraded, got 2.6.20-15.*27* and, as hdagelic said, the problem reappears here, too.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. There is a newer version of the kernel available and we were wondering if you still have the issue with it? Thanks in advance.

i build a kernel configured with pata_amd and have it working with this now.

I have the same problem.
The command $hdparm /dev/hdb (hdb is my cdrom drive) reports:

/dev/hdb:
 IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq = 1 (on)
 using_dma = 0 (off)
 keepsettings = 0 (off)
 readonly = 0 (off)
 readahead = 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

The only way to make the unit reacting is using the command:
$hdparm -w /dev/hdb

Can anyone else confirm that rebuilding the kernel with pata_amd solve the problem? Is that problem related to the amd architecture?

My situation is that since Dapper release I (have to) build my own
(vanilla) kernels, because of this bug. Vanilla kernels work, and rebuilding
with pata_amd works.- Debian, Suse, Slackware kernels work, too....
Actually this is a fairly ubuntu-specific bug ...

The BenQ DW1620 also has this problem.

Bug #75295 seems to be describing the same error messages, but it has nothing do do with usplash. Is it certain that disabling splash is a workaround for this bug?

That was true for the dapper kernel, but is no longer.
See my link to the changelog entry for the feisty kernel.i have tracked down
that this is the change introducing the bug.
So either reenabling pata_amd or running without libata totally would fix it
IMHO.

... and as a side note: quite sad this isn't fixed during the last 4
releases... dapper had it, edgy (of course) had it, feisty had it as well,
and we won't mention gutsy anyway...

I don't want to experiment with building the kernel again and ending up in serious trouble.

Is there a fix planned for the next release of Ubuntu or is there a way you or anyone here can point me to a documentation that enables me to build a kernel and not give me the power to choose to run it or remove it if it does not work? I have a lot of useful data on my laptop and don't want to experiment with it for atleast a few months now.

Can you please confirm that it is ok? I'll probably try it when I get a USB drive of close to 350 GB and once I backup all my required data/multimedia/softwares.

The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. We'll keep this report open against the actively developed kernel but against 2.6.20 this will be closed. Thanks.
