Problem with 3/29 updates.
I have an Acer Ferrari with ATI Mobility Radeon 7000.
My video card no longer works.
I tried updating xorg. No luck.
I tried adding the following to the conf file;
Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,AUTO"
which has worked for the past 8 or so of my installs.
No luck.

Feisty does run from the command line. I have done apt-get update, apt-get install, and then apt-get upgrade.
All updates / upgrades are in place.

I'm not very technically proficient, but I'll help if I can.

Tracked this down. Timo: yes, "vesa" was being used because autodetection was failing. Autodetection was failing because "discover1" (which does the actual PCI-ID matching) was not installed.

This is strange given that:
  paul@katu:~/src/tree/ubuntu.feisty$ grep -r discover1 .
  ./ship: * discover1
  ./live: * discover1 # for X autoconfiguration

so this should be installed by default.

xserver-xorg Recommends: discover1, so it is installed by default. You have removed it for some reason.

Paul, what did you use to install this system? AFAIK the installer has always made very sure to install discover1 before installing xserver-xorg.

I'm trying to think back to when I was testing some earlier xorg packages. If xorg got uninstalled at that point, would it have taken 'discover1' with it (if the auto-removal stuff what used).

One key thing, when I did further --purge/reinstall cycles with 'xserver-xorg' to diagnose this, 'apt-get' was not pulling in 'discover1'---I thought it now pulled in Recommends: by default?

apt-get does not pull in Recommends: packages, aptitude does (at least with the configuration that is used in installer).

It seems like you have installed, then uninstalled, then reinstalled packages, there's no guarantee that autodetection will work when you have uninstalled the autodetection tools.
