Bug Description
I have a "HP Color LaserJet 500 color M551" printer connected to the network.
When I use the printing wizard to add a new printer, it defaults to "HP DesignJet 500". So by just pressing the Forward button, you end up with the wrong printer installed. It does not work with this driver.
To make it even worse, the actual printer is not in the list of printers.
The printer works with the HPLIP driver, however the webpage, confusingly, warns you that you do not need HPLIP, because "HP Color LaserJet 500 color M551" is already provided by your distribution (Ubuntu 12.04).

I also had this problem. I am using kubuntu 12.04 64 bit.
I solved the problem by installing hplip 3.12.4 from http:// hplipopensource .com/hplip- web/downloads. html (I downloaded the automatic installer).
To install, from the terminal I did: (make sure to run the installer from its own directory otherwise you'll have a bunch of files spread all over your download folder).
cd ~/Downloads
chmod +x hplip-3.12.4.run
mkdir tmp
mv hplip-3.12.4.run tmp/.
./hplip-3.12.4.run
Then I just followed the install instructions and accepted the defaults. The installer will remove hplip 3.12.2 (the default that ships with kubuntu 12.04) and install 3.12.4. My printer now works perfectly.
