Bug Description

Linux freezes hard every time I try to play a video from Yahoo using Chromium.
I tried to get more information using another computer following the procedure describe here:

      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash

but nothing is printed on the remote consoles.
Moreover the crashed Linux doesn't respond to "ping".

These crashes happen every time I play a certain video from Yahoo, after only a few seconds.

WORKAROUND: Set in the BIOS DDR2-667 instead of -800.

blue balls, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Christopher, I'll try to do what you ask when I get a chance; right now I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.
I'll see if I can install the daily build of 12.04.

Meanwhile, I did some more testing: I removed the NVidia driver using its "--uninstall" option.
 Then, I did

    modprobe nouveau

and the SYSTEM CRASHED INSTANTLY !!!

It seems that the culprit is the video driver.

One thing worth mentioning is that the main graphic card is an NVidia 8800GTS but there is also a
Radeon graphic card embedded on the motherboard.
Maybe that's where the problems come from.

In Windows XP the crashes do not happen when playing videos.

So far we know the following:

   -no crashes in Windows XP
-regular, reproducible crashes when playing videos using the NVidia drivers:
           NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.41.06
           NVIDIA-Linux-x86-295.40
-instantaneous crash when inserting the Nouveau module:

         depmod nouveau

Since the Nouveau module crash is different from this bug (at least in its behavior), I'll open another bug specifically for it.
It also seems the easiest to debug.

TO: Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch)

I tried the procedure using the linux-crashdump package, but unfortunately there was nothing saved in /var/crash.

In more detail: I did:

    echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/panic_on_oops

as root, then played the video which crashed the system.
After reboot, there was nothing saved in /var/crash.

Just to be sure, I also did the test crash using:

    echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger

as root, and this time there was a file saved in /var/crash.

Then I did the real crash test again, but still noting was saved.

      rmmod ati_agp

before playing the video, but the crash still occured.

About the mainline kernels, which one shouls I test ? The absolutely latest, or the one that maps to my current kernel.
From :

the version that maps to my kernel is:

I did more tests and I found that the bug doesn't occur if I set the memory mode in BIOS to:

    DDR2-667 instead of -800

It looks like the memory is bad but that's probably not true for the following reasons:

-both the memory and the motherboard are spec'ed for DDR2-800
-the same memory has worked at -800 for several years on a different motherboard with no problems
-most importantly: memtest doesn't detect any problem with the memory

It would be quite weird if the memory was bad, memtest didn't detect it in a full pass (about 10mins) but playing a video hits a problem after a few seconds.

I suspect the problem is more complex and it might involve the memory controller or the reserved memory or something else.

I'll keep testing when I get a chance.
Please let me know if there are tests that can clarify this situation.

One other thing: it's still possible that there is a bug in Linux exposed by this particular configuration.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

blue balls, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.13-rc5-trusty/ and advise to the results?
