Hello Son,

Richard and I discussed that last year or the year before and we were not going to change that because the user could have renamed that journal and not used the original title anymore. Or were you going to only change the display name if a certain condition was met?

Cheers
Kristina

Hi Kristina;

I think it is logical that if a user has only one journal, the title of his journal should be altered when he change his name.

Hi Son,

Yes, but what if the user has changed the title from "Paula Paulsen's Journal" to "Learning reflections"? Will it be changed to "Paula Petterson's Journal" when she changes her display name / last name if she doesn't have a display name?

Cheers
Kristina

Kristina,

It's possible we could check the title for the presence of the old name, and simply swap the old name for the new name if it's there.

However, I wouldn't suggest doing this without some form of consent from the user.

Thanks,
Melissa

Melissa,

Yes I am sure that all this is possible on the technical side and just wanted to know if the title change to something entirely else was taken into account.

I am not so sure about necessary consent though (if the journal title has not changed!) as I would also assume that my name is changed everywhere else around the site. It does so for example when I look at Paula's profile page and see today "Paula Paulsen's pages" and tomorrow after she has married, see "Paula Petterson's pages". But that is only a display thing and does not intrude in my personal content / portfolios.

Cheers
Kristina

Mahara shouldn't silently change user data without consent. Personally I don't think we should try to automatically change journal titles.
- We don't have any way of distinguishing a journal title that's never been edited from one that's been edited and then changed back.
- Generally, just because a string happens to be the same as the default doesn't necessarily mean the user wants it to behave as if it's the default.
- What happens if Paula Paulsen already has two journals, "Paula Paulsen's Journal", and "Paula Petterson's Journal" at the time she changes her name?

But I think it'd be okay to do this if we had some policy for Journal title defaults like we do with some of the block titles ("if you leave the title blank, a default title will be generated"). Then we'd store a blank title in the database, and just generate a title to display whenever someone looks at the journal. If the user edited the title, that'd be used instead.

Sounds good to me, Richard, because that would respect the case of a user who had changed the journal title manually.
