Bug Description
im using Ubuntu 12.04, updated as of 10-04-2012 , and im getting this output when tracerouting for an URL:
elhoir@zeus:~$ traceroute http://
http://
Cannot handle "host" cmdline arg `http://
elhoir@zeus:~$
Im connecting to internet via an HTTP proxy which requires authentication

An URL is not a valid host name. The host name is www.asal. atisaemt. es. I don't think it would make sense to add support for various application-level protocols to all network tools.
Marking as "invalid" to mark this as not requiring a fix in Ubuntu. If you want to argue against this decision, please feel free to reopen the bug, but do add a reasonable rationale in that case. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
