Bug Description

When I try to install Ubuntu on a PC with an external HDD that's connected via USB, I can't select the internal one to install Ubuntu on. I have to disconnect the external one(s), and then go back a few steps in the installation procedure until I see the screen that asks me whether I want to install Ubuntu next to Windows, replace it, or create my own partitions. Once I select to install next to Windows again, my internal HDD is displayed, and everything works fine from there.

This phenomenon happens on all the PC's that I've tried Ubuntu on, which are:

1. MSI desktop system, bought in 2003, with Windows XP,
2. Medion laptop, bought in 2009, with Windows 7,
3. Acer Aspire 7250, bought in 2012, with Windows 7.

I'm typing this on PC number 3.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/976545/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I changed the package without knowing what exact package is involved in choosing the drive to install Ubuntu on. Hence it's just ubiquity since that is mentioned in the wiki for install issues.

Allthough this report applies to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS beta 2, it's not new, I think, because I had the same problem with 11.10.

It's been a long time since I filed this, and I switched to Linux Mint years ago, because of its UI, but I just tested an ubuntu 17.10 DVD and found that the install can find /dev/sda now, even with the external disk plugged in, so as far as I'm concerned, the issue has been solved.
