I have the same problem, but also, Alacarte took the whole menu with it! I now have no applications menu. (I use the "main menu" button, rather than a full "menu bar" app, but the menu only contains "places" and "system," no more application menus of any kind...)

Does anyone know what I can do?

I'm pretty sure this is because you ran out of disk space. To get your menu back run 'rm ~/.config/menus/*'. However, you should delete some unneeded files to make some free space as you'll likely have other problems.

I got this problem with menu loosing too. Is 13.9Gb of free space not enough for alacarte?
File .config/menus/applications.menu became empty.

I also got the same problem. But removing the content of ~/.config/menus/ solved the problem.

Problem solved too removing the content of "/home/[user]/.config/menus/". Thanks Travis!

Yes it's solved, my problem was that my hard disk was full and I didn't noticed hehe. Then I did that rm ../menus and it worked again.

Thank you

I have the same problem. I have 69 Gb free space, but all Applications menu diappear when editing.

rm -f ~/.config/menus/applications.menu

restores the menu, but still cannot edit it (attempt to edit leads to the same menu disappearance).

Menues disappear not only in alacarte, but also when editing with gmenu-simple-editor.

The problem appears while removing wine applications, specifically old versions of Need for Speed.

Okay, I have a lot of free space and the same problem: my «Applications» menu is empty after I tried to hide a wine menu item.

There's no need to delete your customized menu!

1) Go to «~/.config/menus» with file manager.
2) Check that file «applications.menu» is empty. Delete this file.
3) You can open your menu now — it works, but it's reset to default.
4) Find non-empty file «applications.menu.undo-XX», where XX is the biggest number you can find in folder.
5) Copy it as «applications.menu». Now everything is fine.
6) Don't delete your wine menu items until this problem is solved.

Further observations:
(there's a lot of Russian names here, hope this doesn't make any problems to your reading)

I deleted the item called «Русская справка» from the wine program «Solo on keyboard 9», when everything crashed.

So I run
 LANG=EN alacarte &>alacarte-error.log

The log looks very useful, look at attachment.

it says about encodings. So I look for menu item called «Русская справка» (attached too):
<Include> <Filename>wine-Программы-Соло на Клавиатуре 9 Три в одном-Русская справка.desktop</Filename> </Include>

I look at ~/.local/share/applications/ and find the file name with some incorrect characters in its name (characters are escaped by «less» command):
 wine-Программы-Соло на Клавиатуре 9 Три в одном-Ру<D1><D1>кая <D1>правка.desktop

So, for some reason wine (imho, wine) created .desktop files with «с» (U+0441 CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER ES) replaced by 0xD1 character. I can run items, I can edit them, but alacarte kills my menu when I try to hide them.

I have another menu item with «с» in its name, and it makes the same problems.

I didn't run out of disk space...33% used atm, but when I tried to uncheck an application to hide it with alacarte, it blanked my menu. Removing ~/.config/menus/* restored my menu again.

He solucionado el problema abriendo una carpeta y colocando /home/[mi_usuario]/.config/menus/ y borrando TODO lo que había ahí adentro.

Gracias por la ayuda.
