It looks like Firefox initializes the behavior wrong, when it comes to open links with target="_blank". E.g. take a look at this example. Go to

and open the forums via the big blue button. With a clean Firefox profile (e.g. after a "rm -rf ~/.mozilla") this link will open into a new window instead of a new tab. This link looks inside the source like that

Even though the Firefox option, under
Edit -> Preferences -> Tabs
is set to open links in a new tab, instead of a new window, it opens that link into a new window. Once, after you clicked again on "New pages should be opened in: *a new tab*" inside the FF options, target=
It looks like, that this option is initialized wrong, while creating a new Firefox profile. This Bug happens at least in Dapper and in Feisty.

Yes, I can confirm this bug. This seems to be a Gnome Firefox specific bug since I haven't this issue with Firefox in Kubuntu (at least Dapper and Edgy).
