Root cause is that we test the kernel module, but we actually want to test the running X driver. If only I would know how to detect that.

This problem persists in gutsy tribe 5; I booted into a live session on my brothers pc. He has a nvidia vga, and I was told that in order to use the desktop effects, it was necessary to use the restricted driver. I agreed and enabled it, and I was told that the computer had to be restarted. If that was true, it wouldn't be possible to use the desktop effects in a live session. I tried restarting X, and everything was fine, except the reboot required message and icon. I don't know if there is anything to gain from a reboot, but if not, another message should be displayed: "A restart of the window system is required".
