Sorry, didn't add extra information.

Release of Ubuntu: 11.10

apt-cache policy pkgname gives:
E: Problem parsing dependency Suggests
E: Error occurred while processing libreoffice-l10n-pa-in (NewVersion2)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/nz.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I was just expecting updates to run as per usual, but package manager won't run at all now.

There are no files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/.

I have the same problem, but with a different distro: 12.04 Precise.

The code spits out the following:

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/medibuntu.org_repository.php_dists_precise_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

1. My OS is 12.04
2. The update manager (default I assume)
3. I want to use it to upgrade....
4. If it doesn't work, I can't even use the terminal to upgrade/update anything.

Thanks in advance.

I was able to get around this bug by trying different source servers - this leads me to think that the bug is actually a problem with some of the inidividual servers (in my case the NZ one) and not necessarily with the update manager itself. It would have been nice to have it try other sources by itself, though.
