Output from running Picasa 3.9 in a terminal.

Picasa 3.9 fails to authenticate with Google. Picasa 3.8 works with the same setup (Ubuntu 11.10).

The problem is known to Google:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Picasa/thread?tid=1c3f770cc876aeb9&fid=1c3f770cc876aeb90004b3eaa15d2dfe&hltp=2

"[...] we've switched to using OAuth in Picasa 3.9 and our implementation isn't supported on WINE."

I'm attaching the output I get when running in a terminal (wine Picasa3.exe). When I try to connect to Google, the following line is output:

"err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0xe10440 "?" wait timed out in thread 0033, blocked by 0009, retrying (60 sec)"

There's still a bug in wine (hidden by using native dlls).

How did you log-in? I click on "Sign-in with Google Account," but after entering my login credentials Google says my browser is no longer supported. I'm using Picasa 3.9/IE6 on a clean Wine prefix. Unfortunately I'm stuck with 1.2.2 for the next couple weeks, but I'd be surprised if that were the difference.

FWIW, IE7 doesn't work for me: it never gives the confirmation after I enter the second factor authentication token.

That's another problem I also bumped into recently. I can no longer install IE6 on Ubuntu Precise 64 bit using wine-1.4-rc6. In fact, I can no longer install Picasa 3.9, either. I think it's bug 8130.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in wine.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

I have the same problem with output similar to that of attachment 38101

My setup is:

Fedora 16 x86_64
wine.i686 1.5.0-2.fc16
Picasa Version 3.9.0 (Build 135.9300) for Linux

I uninstalled Picasa 3.9 and reinstalled Picasa 3.8 and could login to google and upload.

The act of logging in to Google triggered the reinstallation of Picasa 3.9 even when I requested "not now" or if I just closed the pop-up dialog.

I can reinstall Picasa 3.8 do my upload but next time I restart Picasa version 3.9 is installed and I have to repeat the process.

I do have ie6 installed.

The following WORKAROUND inhibits picasa from automatically updating from 3.8 to 3.9:

1. Install any version (3.8 or 3.9) (I installed 3.8)
2. Run picasa and and select in Tools->Options->Automatic Updates: Don't check for updates
3. Close picasa and reopen it. Now it will automatically update to version 3.9.
4. Close picasa again and simply install version 3.8 without uninstalling 3.9.

I am running wine 1.5.0
winetricks installed: ie7 dotnet20 wininet

With this setup it is possible for me to sign in to a google account from within picasa.

This site says to copy over some GoogleOAuth registry key settings from a regular windows based installation of Picasa 3.9 but that would mean having to install your Picasa on windows first, before getting it working on Linux.

Something I notice is logging into Google with wine IE doesn't work very well at all.. but it works awesome with Mozilla Firefox! If Picasa3.9 could use Firefox as the authentication mechanism instead of IE, I think that would fix the issue.

I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't work either.
Then you are beating a dead horse here.

You should never rely on a Google-based platform for your application or service. Yes, that's true for other vendors as well but with Google it's a very persistent habit.

Indeed, connect to google in impossible with Picassa 3.9. Tested in a real windows XP box.

Can an administrator close this bug as ABANDONED?
