Bug Description
Binary package hint: desktop-effects
I recently ran across an issue that came about because my nvidia-glx driver stopped recognizing my hardware and I was forced to install the nvidia-glx-legacy driver. Installing the new driver worked properly, but when starting a desktop that was running compiz I quickly ran into an issue. While the wallpaper displayed there was no panels and nautilus didn't work.
I would suggest reverting to a non-desktop-effects scenario when the graphics driver is changed from one to another. The user can then boot up into metacity then re-enable desktop-effects. This would be a safety net to avoid users who stumbled upon this problem and had no idea how to fix it
