Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

I recently ran across an issue that came about because my nvidia-glx driver stopped recognizing my hardware and I was forced to install the nvidia-glx-legacy driver. Installing the new driver worked properly, but when starting a desktop that was running compiz I quickly ran into an issue. While the wallpaper displayed there was no panels and nautilus didn't work.

I would suggest reverting to a non-desktop-effects scenario when the graphics driver is changed from one to another. The user can then boot up into metacity then re-enable desktop-effects. This would be a safety net to avoid users who stumbled upon this problem and had no idea how to fix it

This was fixed with Compiz 0.3.6-1ubuntu11 , wasn't it? It launches Metacity if Compiz can't load now

it didn't automatically switch over at the time this bug was reported. Sadly, enough of the driver worked that compiz began loading, but not enough for it to be usable. Sadly there was also no apparent way to easily switch back to metacity from the commandline that I saw.

After the Compiz 0.3.6-1ubuntu11 update, I disabled the nvidia driver with restricted-manager and rebooted before disabling Compiz, it just loaded metacity when I logged back in.

Before that update it horribly broke when I tried to log back in, so maybe it's fixed now.

The changelog says:
compiz (1:0.3.6-1ubuntu11) feisty; urgency=low

  * debian/compiz.wrapper:
    - use metacity and not gnome-wm if compiz doesn't work (Ubuntu: #97053)

which was four days after this was reported so maybe it's fixed for you already.
