I came to file a new bug, but I think this bug is basically what I'm experiencing, so I'd like to confirm it.

Machine is standard big-brand P4 with integrated Intel graphics. Distro is Ubuntu Feisty i386, current as of today 2007-04-14. I enabled compositing and acceleration in xorg.conf (using this guide: http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/BerylOnFeisty ) and then installed beryl. I can run beryl-manager and have nice 3D effects or exit it and use metacity.

I installed libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2 and I can put in a DVD and totem comes up and plays it (under metacity).

If I try to play the dvd while using beryl, totem plays the DVD, but the video window stays blank. If I switch to full-screen mode, the video either comes on OR i get some unusual window artifacts but no video. If I switch back to regular size, maybe the video will show up or maybe it will stay black. If I move the window around, maybe it will show up or maybe it will stay blank. After a couple of moves/resizes, it is possible to watch the DVD successfully, so it is ALMOST perfect.

If I close totem, exit beryl, play DVD again, no problem. Close totem, start beryl-manager, start DVD, erratic display/blank.

Changed in beryl-core:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

Probable workaround: Run gstreamer-properties, click on Video tab and select "X Window System (No Xv)"

Thanks Steve. The gstreamer mod worked for me in a similar situation on a Toshiba A135.

I can confirm this bug, all systems I've seen so far using the intel gfx driver behave like this.

The combination AIGLX + XV does not work. If it works, you'll get an video overlay, so your video image wont be transformed by beryl/compiz, which looks strange.

So far, only the nvidia driver can do this.

This is a known bug and I'm surprised nobody cared to handle or workaround this problem in time.

Right now, you enable desktop effects, and if you aren't a lucky owner of an nvidia card, you can't play videos at all. Most people won't know why.
