Parts of the screen corrupt after switching users

Bug Description

When having more users logged in under different sessions, when switching from one user to another some parts of the screen are corrupt. In the attached screenshot the left side of the screen shows this. Sometimes the top is corrupted as well.

the attachment "buggy_screen_after_user_switch" is a screenshot, it just has the extension stripped (my fault).

Affects me too, with very much the same configuration as the original poster: Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, unity, nvidia.

The corruption most often affects the unity left-side vertical icon panel, but also frequently the top menu bar, and from time to time also open application windows. Pretty much everything!

It's recurrent, too -- not just a one-time problem. Redraw a window and the corrupted graphics might go away, only to reappear in a few seconds. Restarting X eliminates the corruption, but obviously that's not an ideal solution.

I believe this was fixed in Unity 6.0 as bug 1016430.
